Tutorial Seven Summary

Assistive Technology

Assistive technology is a range of devices, equipment, services and strategies used to eliminate problems and to improve an individual's level of function. This may enhance learning and enable them to carry out an activity that they may have had trouble with previously (Cook & Hussey, 2000).

Go Talk:
The Go Talk is a communication device which enables the therapist to record a list of messages.
The Go talk comes in a range of sizes and this is determined by the number of messages that can be recorded for example 4 messages, 9 messages or 20 messages. In addition to the 20 message keys, there are five "core message" keys to store frequently used messages. For example the core message keys may include simple everyday commands such as yes and no. The second row maybe used at home to ask questions around the house. The third row maybe useful at school to communicate with other staff and students and is used as a tool for learning. The forth row maybe commands related to an outside activity that the individual may enjoy such as requesting an item from a shop. The go talk includes large buttons, key guards, 15min memory, sound quality, re-record and is light in weight making this piece of equipment easy to use. The Go talk ranges in price between $400-$556 but is the voice of that individual (Retrieved 1 June, 2010, from: http://www.star-educational.co.nz/view_details.php?detail=true&cat=56&subcat=&id=140).

The Go Talk 20 increases an individual's function through ensuring they have a voice wherever they go. This enables them a level of independence and choice in life. In our tutorial we recorded step by step instructions for cheese scones. Each step was recorded and all students listened and completed step when required. This emphasized how the Go Talk 20 works for an individual working in a group setting.
