Tutorial Two Summary

Digital Camera and Applications

In this tutorial we looked at the digital camera and how people use them within society. We then discussed the changes in cameras and how might a camera be useful when in practice.

What do I think about this quote?
"A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature."

With any new piece of technology there are always positive and negative aspects. As one area is improved another area has an impact on the user in some way and this could be costly, for example:

Positive: A digital camera manipulates images, quicker, smaller, lighter to carry, able to take lots of images, delete images, see images easily.

Negatives: Need other equipment in order to get the benefits of using a digital camera such as chord to transfer images to the computer and tripods and there is no sense of a surprise.

The negative aspects mentioned above show that change will have its positive factors but with positive comes the negative factors and therefore the change may not necessarily be beneficial for the user.

However, a film is just a totally different way of capturing the image, it requires more work and developing the negatives. No type of camera is better as they both have their positive and negatives about the technology (Retrieved 24 June, 2010, from www.kenrockwell.com/tech/filmdig n.d.).

How can an image be stored?
Digital images can be transferred using other devices such as photo shop, via email, facebook and pxt and enable other people to share the photos. Photo shop is a computer software that alters the image in some way. for example the oprator is able to crop, re-size, intensify the colour and print as many copies of the same image immediately. Digital images can also be transferred on face book, flickr, my space and many other online communities. These provide a talking point and enable people to share what is happening in your life with other people around the world.

Ethical consideration:
With any piece of technology there are ethical issues that need to be taken into consideration when taking a picture. For example consent and privacy are important as some people do not like having photos taken and posted on insert communities such as facebook. Therefore informed consent is important in order to maintains someones privacy. In practice a therapist needs to be careful of taking photos during a home visit and consider who may view the images (Bynum & Rogerson).

Occupational Therapists use digital cameras to take pictures during a home visit assessment as justification when applying for equipment or take pictures of the clients feet in order to look at their movement. Occupational therapists also use digital cameras in educational settings as a way to further enhance student learning. The pictures can be used to assist story writing activities, emailed home to parents and portray special events happening within the school (Cavanaugh & Cavanaugh, 1997).

The difference between Digital Zoom and Optical Zoom
Digital zoom crops the image by taking the middle of a shot and blowing it up to the full size of the image. However, the optical zoom is the clarity of the camera and stays in focus at all time. In addition when looking at a camera it is important to look at the megapixel. A megapixel is the number of pixels that it takes to make up an image. When determining what camera you should purchase it is important to consider the number of pixels the camera has. For example 3MP stands for 3 million pixels and therefore the more pixels that the camera has, the better the image will be

Flickr is a service that enables people to share photos, communicate and keep in touch with other people. It enables people to share a range of photos, crop, fix, and edit photos. it is a way to follow friends and even stars. A similar photo storage website which offers asimilar service is Picasa Web Albums.
